Oud-Jan Krieler “KOOK”

Rickey Broekhoven (Class of 2010) was a student at Jan Kriel for 10 years. For the last 3 years he is the chef at the prestigious The Restaurant at the Newton Johnson Family Vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Vallei (Hermanus).
He always had a love and a gift for cooking, but he acknowledge that the subject “hospitality studies”, the smaller classes and the passion of the teachers to help every child at Jan Kriel, was crucial in his development.

“Working with people, using local produce and keeping it simple is my style. I also reach out to the local kids in the valley, because I’ll always want to give back in gratitude for what I have received.”    ~ Rickey

We have been fortunate to work with a number of chef’s, but working with Rickey has been the greatest privilege and pleasure. His talents in cooking are incredible, his ability to move into new dishes and new techniques, without ever losing his sense of himself and his skills. His willingness to solve challenges from the kitchen and behind the pass for guests and his colleagues is maturity way beyond his years. We count ourselves extremely fortunate to have Rickey heading up The Restaurant at Newton Johnson
