A new chapter for Jan Kriel Institute

Hilette Jan Kriel Instituut

Updated: 3 days ago

From March 1, 2025, the Jan Kriel Institute will operate as an independent, non-profit organization (NPO).

A hundred years ago, in 1925, Jan Kriel died at the age of 16. Mrs. Kriel saw the need for children suffering from 'falling sickness' and established the Jan Kriel Home and School in 1937. Since 1942, the Jan Kriel Institute, as part of the Dutch Reformed Church, has been responsible for the management of the assets and property as well as fundraising, to ensure the continued existence of high-quality specialist education for the learners of Jan Kriel School. The Dutch Reformed Church decided in 2003 to operate the Jan Kriel Institute as a programme of BADISA.

In recent years, in discussions between the Dutch Reformed Church, BADISA and the Institute's board, it has become clear that it is better for the activities of the Institute to function independently. Jan Kriel Institute will be operated as an independent NPO from 1 March 2025. As a member of the new NPO, the Dutch Reformed Church remains involved and committed to Jan Kriel and the Institute's activities.

How does this affect Jan Kriel learners and their funding? NOT AT ALL - Jan Kriel Institute's vision and mission, to support the education of Jan Kriel learners, remain unchanged, as does the management and operations of the Institute.

What impact does the change have on donors? NONE - The Institute retains the same bank account, each donor also retains their special donor number and all contact details, addresses and electronic channels of the Institute remain the same.

So, for all practical purposes, all activities and obligations will continue as normal! The only impact that the new NPO number will have on donors is that receipts will show the new NPO & PBO numbers from 1 March 2025. Tax certificates for the 2024/2025 tax year will however still be issued under the current BADISA NPO number, as a programme of BADISA.
