Jan Kriel School

Jan Kriel School offers tuition to learners from Grade R to Grade 12. The curriculum is presented according to the National Revised Curriculum Statement, the same as that of mainstream schools. At the end of Grade 12, learners write the National Senior Certificate Examination of the Department of Basic Education.

Class groups are significantly smaller than in mainstream schools and teaching techniques are adapted to address the individual educational needs of learners.

Efforts are made here to promote the academic development of learners, to restore and build their self-confidence and to equip them with the necessary skills so that they can continue, if at all possible, in mainstream teaching.

Teamwork is an important aspect of the services provided at the school. The involvement of and collaboration between educators, support staff, parents and learners within the team is essential to ensure that each learner's learning barriers are optimally intercepted and addressed.

Jan Kriel School is a resource center where the staff share their knowledge, skills and experience with parents, learners and educators from other special schools and mainstream schools where learners are accommodated with learning disabilities.

An extensive support team is available to support and promote the physical, social, emotional and academic needs and development of learners as well as to facilitate the accommodation of learners within the school and the curriculum.

The support team includes people from the following professional groups:

  • Educational psychologists

  • Counselor

  • Social worker

  • Professional Nurses

  • Occupational therapists

  • Physiotherapists

  • Speech, Language and Hearing Therapists

  • Learning Support Educators

The school has specially equipped learning facilities in the Primary and High School that focus on the management and coordination of learning support and assessment accommodation within the school.
